Nitra.net

nitra.netDiscover Slovakia / Objavte Slovensko. A long-form editorial journey through the country, written end to end in both English and Slovak.

What it is

Slovakia is a country most people can place on a map and describe in one sentence, and the sentence is usually wrong. Nitra.net is the long version: castles and the thousand years of stone behind them, the High Tatras — the smallest Alps in Europe — folk culture and the table it is served on, and a modern economy built on precision manufacturing.

Every chapter runs bilingually, English and Slovak side by side, rather than as a translated afterthought. You can read it as a narrative from the first chapter, pick a theme, or browse the country region by region — and there is a business directory underneath for the practical half of a trip.

The map

The front page opens on an animated map of Slovakia's railway and motorway network — hand-built SVG, not a tile service — tracing the Váh, Hron and Danube and the towns strung along them, from Bratislava through Trnava, Nitra, Žilina and Poprad to Košice. It is the country's actual shape as a traveller experiences it: where the lines go is where you can get to.

Scale

6,803 pages — the largest of these sites after MyHealthcare.com — every one of them carrying both languages.
